Perth based company Bauxite Resources Ltd (BRL) has had a strong interest in Woylie conservation since 2008. In January 2010, BRL provided seed funding of $50,000 to the scientific and conservation community to employ a Woylie disease investigation manager. It is the first time in Australia that funds have been specifically provided to engage a dedicated Disease Investigator with the core role of Woylie disease research. The aim is to arrest the rapid decline of a dwindling species population - the last surviving in Australia here in a few very small pockets in Western Australia. The collapse of this once vibrant species has been likened to a ‘science fiction horror' and has puzzled researchers scratching their heads.
BRL will continue to support and champion the rescue campaign with its strategic partners and the WA community. BRL also has a vision to create a significant ‘protective habitat reserve' on the company's planned Mooramurra Wildlife Sanctuary at Bindoon, north of Perth.
