Bindoon Bauxite Mining Proposal
In August 2010, the Bindoon Bauxite Mining Proposal was referred to the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) for Environmental Impact Assessment under Part IV of the Environmental Protection Act 1986. This proposal includes 10 properties and access granted through private landholder agreements. The sites are located in North Bindoon in the Shire of Chittering. This project proposes to mine two million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of bauxite ore for a period not less than five years. This bauxite will be sold as Direct Shipping Ore (DSO) to China, or sold locally as other products (e.g. gravel).
This proposal will be formally assessed at the Public Environmental Review (PER) level, with an eight-week public review period.
In November 2010, the Bindoon Bauxite Mining Proposal was referred to the Commonwealth Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities as a Controlled Action, for assessment under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The proposal will be assessed through the accredited WA Environmental Impact Assessment process under the bilateral agreement between the federal and WA governments.
